Meet Our 2022 Merle Hinkle Scholarship Winners

Meet this year’s two amazing recipients of our Merle Hinkle scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to one high school student and one college student who best exemplify the spirit of community service.

Brylee Bergbower

Brylee Bergbower recently graduated from Lindale High School, where she was a leader in cheer, student council and academic performance.

Brylee volunteered with her National Honor Society and the Lindale Food Pantry, activities she did “for the sole reason of being a genuine, caring member of this generation.” Her food pantry work taught her how volunteering brings a whole community together.

She plans on attending the University of Texas at Tyler to study Business Marketing. Brylee wants to eventually work in real estate.

Matthew Castillo

Matthew Castillo currently attends the University of Texas at Tyler. He participated in marching band, played basketball and is a College Board National Hispanic Scholar.

Matthew volunteered at his local food pantry and now volunteer coaches basketball at the high school he attended. Working at the food pantry was a “transformative experience,” and struggling families’ joyful attitudes taught him to always have “a positive attitude towards life.”

Matthew plans on graduating with a Computer Science degree and eventually wants to found his own tech startup.

The Kelly Community family is proud to award this scholarship – named for our late board chair Merle Hinkle – to these two fine students, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for them. Congratulations Brylee and Matthew!
