Up Close With Scholarship Winner Jake Johnson

Congratulations, once again, to Jake Johnson, one of our two scholarship winners this year. Let’s get two know him a little better.

Jake attended Big Sandy High School where he was an active member of FFA, the band and a multitude of sports. The biggest highlight of his senior year was receiving an offer to play baseball and getting accepted to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. This summer, he is playing baseball and spending time with family before leaving for college.

Jake plans to play both baseball and basketball in college, while pursuing a career in teaching and coaching. “I picked this school because it’s a small Christian-based school that allows me to have easy access to my teachers when needed. I also really like the coaches and baseball facilities they have to offer,” he said.

Baseball runs deep in Jake’s blood. “I have always loved baseball and want to be around the game for as long as possible. My role model is Jose Altuve. He was always doubted because of his size, and people weren’t sure if he would be any good to play. All he asked for was a chance. He is now a successful baseball player who also stays out of trouble because he believed in himself.”

Jake volunteers as a little league softball and basketball coach, as a math tutor for elementary school students and for Special Olympics. “My volunteer experiences have helped me prepare for my future career by allowing me to learn how to connect with kids at all different levels and backgrounds,” he said. Jake plans to become a coach and math teacher.

When he isn’t on the baseball diamond or in the classroom, Jake loves four-wheelers and fishing. On behalf of everyone at Kelly Community, we wish you the best in your future endeavors, Jake!
